Grandfather Mountain is a mountain, a non-profit attraction, and a North Carolina state park near Linville, North Carolina.At 5,946 feet (1,812 m), it is the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains, one of the major chains of the Appalachian Mountains.The Blue Ridge Parkway passes by the south side of the mountain and also passes over the nearby Grandmother Gap. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., guests can enjoy interpretive talks from zoo educators and observe the animals receiving special birthday enrichments. This state park opens the mountain’s 2,456-acre backcountry to spectacular hiking and backpacking.

As the regulations are written, Grandfather would not qualify as a “publicly operated zoo,” an “educational facility,” an “educational institution” or a “research institution,” and would therefore be subject to strict regulations governing the habitats where animals reside.
