Carter Notch Trail is a 6.4 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Jackson, New Hampshire that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is best used from March until October. Hikers can choose to hike to Mount Hight (Highly recommended due to the amazing 360 degree views. There are also a pair of particularly picturesque lakes and the Carter Notch Hut. Carter Notch Hut offers co-ed bunkrooms and separate washrooms with toilets. Electrical outlets are not available. Carter Notch Hut Carter Notch Hut is one of eight backcountry huts managed by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) within the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire.
AMC Huts are in backcountry locations and are “off the grid”. From the hut we took the Appalachian Trail to the summit of Carter Dome and the returned the same way to the hut for the evening. This hut is situated between the summits of Wildcat Mountain and Carter Dome and is adjacent to the Carter Lakes. Carter Notch is the impressive cleft between Carter Dome on the north and Wildcat Mountain on the south.
